Tirana to Berat by Car: Day Trip Guide to the City of a Thousand Windows
Berat, the famous city of a thousand windows, is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips in Albania. The drive from Tirana to Berat by car covers around 100 km and takes 1.5–2 hours on good roads, which leaves you a full day to explore the Ottoman old town, the hilltop castle and the riverside promenade before an easy evening drive home.

The Route: Tirana to Berat by Car
There are two sensible options. The main route runs via Durrës, Rrogozhinë and Lushnjë on flat, well-surfaced roads — the most relaxed drive. An alternative heads out on the Elbasan side before cutting south-west. Both take 1.5–2 hours; the Lushnjë route is generally quicker and easier to navigate. Leave Tirana by 8–9 am and you will be walking Berat's cobbles before the day heats up. There are no toll roads on this route, and fuel for the round trip costs roughly €15–20 as of 2026.

An Hour-by-Hour Day in Berat
Morning: The Castle Quarter
Arrive around 10 am and drive (or take a taxi) up to the Kala, Berat's hilltop castle quarter — remarkably, still inhabited today. Wander the Byzantine churches, ramparts and viewpoints over the Osum valley, and visit the Onufri Museum with its luminous 16th-century icons. Allow two hours or so.
Midday: Mangalem and Lunch
Descend to Mangalem, the hillside quarter whose stacked white facades and rows of windows gave Berat its nickname. Lunch in the old town — traditional dishes and local Çobo wines are excellent, with mains around €5–10.
Afternoon: Gorica and the Bridge Viewpoints
Cross the Gorica footbridge for the classic postcard view of Mangalem across the river, then explore the quieter Gorica quarter on the far bank. Finish with a coffee on the riverside boulevard before driving back — you can be in Tirana by 8 pm.
Where to Park in Berat
Park along the boulevard that follows the Osum river — spaces are plentiful outside July and August and cost little or nothing. The old quarters of Mangalem and Gorica are walk-only, with steep cobbled lanes, so do not attempt to drive in. If you drive up to the castle, note that parking at the top is limited; arriving before 11 am helps.
Worthwhile Add-Ons
- Çobo winery: a family winery just off the road near Berat — an easy stop for tastings (your driver abstains, of course) and bottles to take home.
- Osum canyon: in summer, extend south past Skrapar for one of Albania's most dramatic gorges; it turns the day trip into a very full day or an overnight.
- Belsh lakes: on the Elbasan-side route, a pleasant lakeside coffee stop.
When to Go
Spring and autumn are ideal — warm light on the white facades and comfortable walking temperatures. Summer works well too if you do the castle early; winter days are short but the old town is beautifully quiet.
